Associations of Early Life Ambient PM2.5 Exposure With Asthma Risk in a Cohort of Preterm Infants with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Three members of PRCCEH, Dr. Scott A. Lorch, Dr. Heather H. Burris, and Dr. Timothy Nelin, recently collaborated with 13 other authors to publish an article that examined weather exposure to fine particulate matter during the first year after discharge from the NICU for infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is associated with asthma by age five. The study found that exposure to PM2.5 in the first year of life after discharge from the NICU was associated with asthma by age five among children with BPD, highlighting that early-life air quality is a modifiable determinant of long-term respiratory outcomes in infants with BPD.
